I almost ruened my dinner earlier. here's what happened. Some weeks ago my boyfriend and I made a trip to Sam's Club where we picked up a bag of uncooked plane tyson chicken wings among other things. My boyfriend made quite a few of them in hoisin sauce and honey. I ate a couple and they were pretty good. After a while he grew tired of them and told me to feel free to eat what was left. Now I usually like a little savery with my sweet sauces, so I decided to shake a bit of season salt in along with the other two to enhance its tastiness. I bought this particular seasoning from Sam's Club as well, so it came in this huge plastic container with tiny holes on one side of the cap, and a wide open space on the other. I spooned out the last of the hoisin sauce onto the pan, opened the salt and gave it one hell of a shake. When I felt the bottle get significantly lighter I knew right away I opened the wrong side. Some time ago I read that there's almost nothing you can do to remedy oversalting food, however you might be able to remove the over salted area if you catch it before you stir it in. I grabbed hand after hand of salt, tilting the pan over the sink and pouring it out, then finally had to resort to taking away some of the precious sauce. after I got out as much of it as I could, I dipped a finger in to try it to see if I'd be able to stand it. I know I must've made a face. Not bad, but still a bit too much. I dumped the wings in anyway, added a few hands full of water, honey and ground black pepper and rubbed it all in before putting them into the oven. Fourty-five minutes later they were done. I tried them, and they were absolutely delicious! And as Roy Avers read A Clash of Kings to me, I enjoyed my rescued meal with a jar of wine tempered with a can of ginger ale (don't judge me) and lived happily ever after. The end.
I judge you for being able to listen to Roy Avers' voice! :)
Glad you were able to rescue your dinner and the only remedy I've heard of for too much salt is adding potatoes to soak the salt up.
Shit happens, but hopefully never again when you are hungry. Lol
Roy Avers and Roy Dotrice both make me sad. I have trouble listening to GRRM's books because neither of them is very good. Dotrice is better, for the most part.
Anyway, glad you saved your dinner. It dooes suck when that happens though. I've oversalted things a few times before.
It happens less and less as I've gotten better in the kitchen, but yeh, salt and I use to be in an on and off relationship. It was either too much, or barely any at all. I even had an incident years ago when I accidently used green tea with ginseng and honey flavored arazona iced tea instead of water in a pot of ox tails. I was so pissed off that when my boyfriend tried to eat more (yes, we actually had some) I charged out of my room, removed his plate from the microwave and threw it's contents into the garbage lol. Now I comfortably make juicy burgers chicken and ribeye steaks on the grille, baked ziti, slow cooked soups and stews, oven roasted ribs, breakfast foods like bacon and eggs, deep fried french toast, pancakes and I love mixing various cold drinks. I've mixed fresh ginger and orange juices, taiwan style cold milk ice teas (basically black tea mixed with milk and sugar. I use half and half) Yes and even mixing my alcahol with other stuff. Mostly shoprite ginger ale but its only because I love that particular brand of ginger ale so much. The best in my opinion is the Boylan's brand. (don't judge me I said!)
The only thing I'm terified of is baking. A horrific baking experience I had when I first moved out on my own scarred me and I haven't tried to make anything sweet in the oven since. Well, accept maybe for that one time I made cornbread, but that didn't turn out too good either, so if anyone has any tips for baking a cake I'd love to know.
I'll trade you baking tips for cooking tips!!! What do you say?
I do as my mother and grand mother do. They always put the seasoning in there hand to measure it.
That way, you don't get it on the food until you're ready.
Plus, if you get the bottle of seasoning in your hand, you can put it back. Lol
and you know I usually do that, but I was careless and the holes on the one side were so tiny. That's why I gave it sucha monstrous shake. Lol!
I'll give you as many tips as I've been told and taught by others. What kinds of things do you and anyone else like to cook and eat? I'm gonna make a board topic entitled, kitchen nightmares. Hahaha!
Careful, you might tick old loud-mouthed Gordon Ramsy off. LOL
Oh please make that topic of kitchen mishaps! It would make me feel better!
I'm getting better at cooking finally! I'm so glad you were able to save your dinner!!
Glad you could save it! yummy food!
